The last couple i've had have been from Amazon.
I did try and buy a Chromebook from Curry's and it was a real PITA to be honest. First shop I was in didn't have stock and told me another one which did which wasn't too far from my house so I went to store number 2, they tried telling me they didn't have stock too, I told them I was informed by another store they did and when they bothered to check lo and behold there was some in their store room, the "salesman" still seemed like it was inconvenient for him, despite the store being empty, overall wouldn't recommend Curry's .

I have no idea why Currys are like this, they seem to want you to order online. If I walk into a store then just have stuff in stock! I just buy online now, there is little point visiting a physical store as
1)They probably won't have the laptop you are interested in on display
2)They are highly unlikely to actually have it in stock

1)I stand in the middle of the store with my "if you just talk to me I will buy a laptop, it will be the easiest sale you have ever made" face on as I am totally ignored.
2)I eventually go to the till with my card in hand, ask for the specific model only to be told "We don't have any of those in stock"
I notice Dell have the following laptop which seems fairly decent for the money (£379 16GB ram, 512GB SSD and i5-1334U)

Check all the usual mainstream places online to see which is cheapest.
Check whether you can make a further saving using Quidco or similar.

Buy from the cheapest place.
For non computer folks like me "work out which laptop I want" is the hard bit! Check all the usual mainstream places online to see which is cheapest.

I'm assuming if you're a non computer person you don't have any specific requirements, and it's mostly going to be used for web browsing and maybe some document stuff. I'm also assuming you don't have an on-hand IT guru to sort things out. I'm also assuming you don't want to spend megabucks. A windows 11 laptop should have 16GB of RAM, a 512GB drive (probably SSD) and after that, you're not going to get much benefit from any other differences that might be there (processor, brand).The only considerations are:
i) portable or will be hooked up to a larger monitor (in which case a 14" screen is better, or ii) it's not going to move and you don't have a bigger screen, in which case you might want to have a larger 15" or bigger screen. This is where going into Currys or John Lewis will help because you can see them for real.
ii) New or second hand - back market and other similar stores sell refurbished laptops - sometimes you can find very good deals on these (usually 3 year old machines that are now out of warranty and might be 1/3 the original price). But to be honest, you'd want to be buying something that was very good 3 years ago (so probably cost £1000 at the time - Lenovo, or Dell/HP corporate laptop models) and is now sold for £400 or less - for that price, you can get a reasonable Asus / Acer from Argos brand new.
I treat Currys now like Amazon, or anywhere else. I have bought quite a few things online for collection in store - it saves delivery cost if you're going there anyway, and they occasionally have good deals. I wouldn't walk in there looking to buy something. AO now sell laptops. Argos are fine and their logistics is pretty good. John Lewis is probably the only bricks and mortar store I would contemplate walking into with a view to selecting and taking away a product.

I always buy refurbished from from the bay of e.Just bought a Lenovo which is not as good quality as the HP's I've had in the past, but is plenty good enough for £90.
Just needed a windows 11 machine which I will probably boot from a live Linux USB stick most of the time.
