How to make an LED matrix look good?

Most of the available LED matrices look pants imo as you can see the bare LEDs and the pcb they are attached to. If you want to panel mount such a display then how do you make them look good?

Frosted glass / plastic in front of them. Aliexpress probably sell diffusers ready to perform this task.

Do you need to use a matrix array. You can get get very large single LED chips these days.
