This doing my fookin 'ed in.

Went down the powerline network route|http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=95&t=212024 finally but, I cant get the USB modem to share its effin' connection properly.

Anyone done this/had this problem. Ignoring the powerline network element for the moment( I currently am trying to do it with a straight connection cat5 cable), I have got the host and client happily talking to each other but not t'internet.

Please help before I defenestrate the laptop.

Oh yeah, using W2k on both.:banghead::censored::curse::headache:

Enabling ICS on the dial-up connection will set your network card's IP to 192.168.0.1. On the other PC you need to have an IP from 192.168.0.2 to 254. The default gateway and DNS settings on the other PC need to point to 192.168.0.1. Either that or just set them to 'auto'.

Try disabling the firewall on the internal network connection of the ICS PC?

What errors are you getting / at what point does it fall down?

I've tried auto settings and pointing at specific IPs. Neither seems to work. I've also tried switching off all internet security and firewalls.

I get a simple page cannot be displayed error.

Pinging google gives me an unknown host, but pinging my ISP gives me 4 timed out errors.

I'm currently trying a trial version of wingate as a temporary solution but even that doesn't seem to work.

Any other thoughts?

Ta.

If you do a tracert to 212.58.226.19 from the second PC, what do you get?

destination host unreachable

I'll have to remove wingate and try again as well.

Bugrit.

If you are running the cable from PC to PC, you cannot use a patch cable it has to be a "crossover" cable.

Also, why not just buy a cheap router with built in NAT server? Might be a little easier.

Aye! That looks like the next step, its clear that the USB modem just refuses to share. Having googled around the problem it looks like a very common one for which I am yet to find a simple solution.

No hops at all, just straight into destination unreachable? Is the gateway definatley set right on the second machine? If you type 'route print' what does it say?

If you type

route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1

Can you do the tracert? does 'tinternet work?

Route addition failed. either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface

Can you post the output of

ipconfig /all

?

If you use 'mark' 'copy' then paste in the command prompt window then it will save some pecking

Edit: You can also try clicking 'uninstall' on TCP/IP on the network connection properties, rebooting, then installing TCP/IP again (in the same place)

Thanks for your help so far aldi, I've just fitted a new HDD to the laptop and am doing fresh installs of everything. I did get access to t'internet for a while using wingate then went to try the network plugs and since then its all gone tits up, I cant even get them to see each other on the network (having gone back to a xover cable).

I'm beginning to suspect that the supplied software with the homeplugs is a bit crap, their support was also less than useful.

Poo.

Plug software removed. Norton updated on pc and old one installed on laptop (so no conflicts). Wingate disabled, TCP/IP reinstalled. Lovely the network is working reliably at last. So install modem on Laptop to update software, try to see if it will share in this direction, lo and behold it does.

Right, plug modem back into PC, repeat configuration, bollox, no joy. Me thinks there is summat up with the ethernet adapter, find new driver, install, reboot and bugger me it all works.

Now to see if I can use the homeplug network or not.

Yes I did, please keep going. Note, I had it disabled most of the time I was trying to sort it.

However, the homeplug is now working, woo hoo!

Can anyone point out how to test the speed of the network?

Norton Internet Security is a firewall and will more than likely block the ICS by design! You would need to create specific exceptions for the other machine to connect through it.

Haven't tried the exact combination you're using, but some firewalls don't disable quite as much as you would think they have.

Glad it's working now.

The fresh installs worked a treat actually, once the lan adapter had its new driver everything started working properly. Believe me, Norton is a million miles better than the McAfee crap I used to have on there.

LAN speed testing, any suggestions?
