Any FREE online programming tutorials.

I need to up my skill set, looking at jobsites a lot of helpdesk work (which to be honest I am fed up of after 5+ years but not got the experience/skills to move away from) are requiring some programming.

Visual Basic (Or some other type of Basic).

HTML (May or may not be considered programming) which could lead on to Javascript.

Go down the Java route. Download Netbeans, a free IDE and work through its tutorials. Then look on http://java.sun.com for all the docs you could ever need.
Then google for more Java tutorials. There's loads out there.

Java's very easy to pick up the principles and get going quickly.

IBM's Eclipse is a superb free IDE (Integrated Developmnet Environment) for programming in Java - worth getting to grips with, lots of people are using it now.

(recommended to me by a fellow PHer - I forget who now)

Hmmm......not much of a Java fan.... I'd chose PHP, but if your really not sure, go to the Web Monkey (www.webmonkey.com).

There are loads of tutorials there for you to browse through and then you can ponder for a while to decide which language you prefer.....

(PHP is great)

Anyhow, it's up to you but keep in mind PHP is available on most web hosting systems and it's integration with MySQL and PostgreSQL is fantastic. It's also fully compatible with Oracle, Access and MSSQL.

Hope this helps!
