I know I know when you don't pay for it I'm the product etc. But it's become so bad it's almost unusable with the amount and size of ads, not to mention their placement within the inbox and sub folders. Three-quarters of my screen in the android Gmail app was ads, 2 at the top, then a couple of legit emails with another ad in-between.

Maybe a good reason to try an alternative, Proton and Tutamail seem to be getting alot of mentions in the techy world (at least the UK/EU/non-USA techy world). Maybe a good reason and time to ditch Gmail, or at least for my "proper" or "private" email address (banking, friends and family, jobs etc) while Google can continue to host the "spam" email address (social media and substack and what not).

I thought Gmail was the email address to have for all the kids? I have a hotmail account that I have had since around 1996/97 which is fullname@hotmail.com (no dots, numbers, weird characters etc) and apparently that immediately singles me out as being ancient.

You could try just having an ad blocker installed? Won't stop your emails - will stop the ads spoiling the view. Pretty sure there are free versions of ad blockers on the Play store.

I got myself a hotmail account once and within half an hour, my inbox was getting unfiltered spam - despite me not having given it to anyone yet. I ditched it.

There's no reason you have to use Gmail's client just because you use a Gmail email address.

News to me too. I've used it since the start and never seen an ad!

I was just thinking the same. What phone and is it the default or an aftermarket app OP?
I'm using the default Gmail app on my phone and no adverts at all, but I'm not sure if that's a base android app or a Samsung One UI one.

I think it shows ads (at least on the desktop version) if you use some of the smart inbox features.

Win10 - GMail client on Chrome - no ads.
iOS - GMail app - no ads
Basic Android (Amazon tablet) - GMail app - no ads

Not sure where your ads are coming from.

Quite happy with my gmail account both in usage and look.
Never had an ad issue either.
Hotmail on the other hand not so pleasant to use or indeed outlook which I also rarely use.

No ads on desktop but you get ads on the android app in the promotions tab.

I got my gmail account early enough that it's abname@gmail.com. My problem now is that I get emails for morons (in multiple countries) who think their email is a.b.name@gmail.com

Don't think I've ever seen an ad on gmail.

I just use Chrome or Safari and usually a normal ad-blocker. Also pay for the minimum tier of additional storage.

I don't see a promotions tab, don't know what it is but sounds like I don't need or want it
