This spark generator takes 5VDC in and generates a spark at 400KV (according to the Chinese sales blurb). I'd like to use it within a kid's science project I'm making (installed about 15mm behind a plastic window in a metal enclosure.

How safe or not is this to do?

I assume the spark only jumps between the two electrodes and won't jump through the window to a kids finger or to the nearby metal enclosure? Is it legal to use (as in will it generate interference on everyone's TV for miles around and so on)?

Any thoughts appreciated tia.

You can probably work out what these are meant for and it's not for lighting a hob.

Legal? Maybe not entirely, especially depending on how & where used? Easy enough to do interference tests, it's fairly likely it'd cause some.

Safe? Depends on what you do with it, you really wouldn't enjoy touching it. Keep it well insulated & away from any possibility of being touched and it should be OK.

Interference & safety probably could both be sorted with a grounded mesh outer enclosure?

Hmmmm let me think.

By the time you see the warning they've already done it.

The Chinese overt front door taking the piss is becoming both worrying and irritating.

My Chinese CCTV system has a user account called user that I can't delete, modify or set a password for.

You just need the secure serial number to login.

The same number you need to see the chinese server relayed images via the app.

Hmmmm again.

The war hasn't started but we've already lost.

I expect that your Taser device is 100% illegal and may get intercepted by customs resulting in you possible getting a knock.

More likely it's already in the UK and will be posted from the Birmingham or London Chinese tat super warehouses.

You could try one of these. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005662414764.h...

Bit noisy in use, but entertaining.

I did consider one of those but the pictures I've seen of them always show them in a dark room which implies to me the field lines are feeble/weak???

I expect darkness might help, but I haven’t tried it. You can see it well enough in a normally lit room.

I will mention that I had one of these to play with 15 years ago, they're a fun little toy/demo thing but need treating with care. No idea how long they last before failing, I suspect not long.

Not sure on the outright legality - as a bare component I can't see the issue because it's just a variation of a common electrical part. But very easy to make it solidly illegal if packaged the wrong way.

As a spark/arc generator in a display case probably no different than anything else that can do the same job.

If you want it 'safe' remember there are multiple hazards, including looking at the arc itself without eye protection.
