I stopped using them when they had a massive security leak. I suspect I'm not the only one

Maybe.

I thought something did happen with bitwarden though - I used to use it, and something triggered me to stop. But perhaps I'm mis-remembering the reason

No this is different and nothing like as bad as when LastPass screwed up a few years back
