I recently had to format my pc and reinstall xp and the like - before doing this I had sound - eg from dvd's and mp3's
BUT
now the only sound i can get is the occasional windows beep when carrying out various functions!

Thinking about getting a soundcard (there isn't one in there) - perhaps soundblaster live??

2 questions!!

1. HOw could i get the motherboard sound working again (til i get a card)????
2. Is it easy to install an internal soundcard??

many thanks!!

did you install the drivers for the soundcard? if it was working before, all you need to do is goto the motherboard manufacturer (or if it's a dell etc go to there website), download the drivers and isntall them.

yep, generally speaking drivers wise you need:

1) motherboard drivers (various bus's, ports etc)
2) soundcard drivers (onboard)
3) USB drivers for the motherboard
4) graphics card drivers

along with any other peripherals you have attached.

What make/model is your machine?

asus make very good motherboards.

If you restart your machine it should give you a product code as well as the machine is booting, failing that, hit del just after you start it and have a mooch about in the bios to find a product number. Mine for instance is Asus A8V Deluxe rev.2.

If you right-click on my-computer -> properties -> hardware -> device manager, is there anything with a yello circle and an exclamation mark? Those are the things that need drivers.

Hi There,

Are you sure you have not disabled motherboard on-board sound ?

Have you plugged the cables in the right way ?
Speakers / microphones no the other way round.

***Buying a sound card ? ***

Don't go for the Soundblaster Live - go for a
Soundblaster Audigy 2 instead.

Live - £24 Audigy £38 - well worth the difference.
sound is amazing !
