Bit the bullet on a PC, finally

Finally decided on a build.

I’ll leave total costs out for now and discussion but as far as I can tell the component price nonsense isn’t easing anytime soon. I’m not interested in fancy lighting or cases. I specified for function and performance.

I'll put my guess at £1500, but I think I may have somewhat underestimated current RAM pricing.

Motherboard, case, cooler, PSU, CPU prices seem to be fairly normal - just the exorbitant RAM, SSD, GPU prices that take the fun out of PC building.

16Gb will fullfil almost all gaming needs unless you play Star Citizen.

9070XT is cheaper, and faster, though their upscaler is not as well supported as DLSS. I only notice it in one game where their AA is poor in comparison (DayZ).

If it will fit in your case, a TR Phantom Spirit 120SE is a cheaper and better cooler than the Noctua. I had the Noctua on my Ryzen 7 9700X and with some mild overclocking it could not cope with the temperatures. I don't know how will it will cope with your CPU which is 120W.

I just bought a new gaming rig with the same CPU (7800X3D) and the RAM usage tends to top out at 24 GB (out of 32) when playing CP77 or STALKER 2.

Still using my old 3070 because GPUs are insane... I'd already spent £300 on the RAM.

That's a *fairly* fancy case

My son has a Meshify 2, it's really nicely built, you can see where the extra £50-100 goes over a cheaper case.

I'd consider swapping the 7800X3D for a 9800X3D considering it is barely any more expensive. Also consider the AMD 9070 XT as it is basically the same price as the 5070.

There is not much to cut from that really except going for a very marginally cheaper case, PSU or SSD. The absolute cheapest (and out of stock) 32GB RAM kit is £359.99 and that is C40.

I would swap 5070 for 9070XT. AMD raytracing and FSR has caught up a lot. The extra VRAM will be more beneficial than access to DLSS imo. If I was building today I would be going 9070XT for sure.

You could get a cheaper cooler if you want to save a few more ££.

I bought 32GB for just shy of £300 not more than six months ago. This surely has to be one of the signs of the Apocalypse.

It looks like all those 5070s are the lower-end 12gb model.

So the extra £20-£40 for an AMD 7090XT with 16GB may be a better buy.

If you'd had to buy a modern 1080p GPU as well, that could have easily have added another £500 on top.

Lucky you only went for the cool 9600X and not any of the X3D versions, as that PCS cooler is quite budget (ignore the advertised TDP as it's ball hocks).

Indeed. I was happy to get the spec I did at the price. Being less careful, that would have become a £1400 machine and still no GPU.

BTW, for reference, 2 years ago I bought a new gaming PC (sans GPU) and it was £1600.

Really don't want to think what it would cost nowadays.
