I'm changing my old backup phone (with a Micro SIM) and the new one will have Nano SIM.

YouTube guides seem to say you can cut the sim with scissors, as the gold chip is the same size, but unfortunately on my Micro SIM the gold chip is larger than a Nano SIM!

Any tips please? Can I still cut it, or do I need to go to a phone shop?

It s fine; those outer bits aren t needed - trace the outline of the nano onto the micro and then cut it out - use the top edge as the point to pair them both before measuring/cutting

I might just be particularly cack-handed, but I tried cutting one years ago and - although there was no obvious damage - it stopped working. I was then without a SIM, so I'd suggest getting a replacement instead.

I don’t think you can cut that micro sim down to a nano sim as it is an older style micro sim which is larger than the newer style nano sim.

Yes it's fine to cut that down, I have done the same for an older style the same as yours and just cut through the excess contact.

The one thing you do need to be mindful of is doing each cut as one successful action rather than repeated "bites" as this can cause the plastic to flex along the blades and give you an uneven cut. Much easier once you've done a few.

Or as others have suggested, just ask your network for a replacement nano sim. Sometimes (like if you're on PAYG like with Tesco) you can just pick up a new PAYG sim from a shop, activate it and then perform a sim swap to move your service from the old sim to the new sim.
