Got a cheap HP 2810e printer about a year ago. Ran it on the starter cartridges and ordered some non-HP cartridges online as there didn't seem to be any full (305 spec) cartridges anywhere in the packaging.
Printer has been running fine on the non-HP cartridges but now they're empty so I went to fit the original HP ones (which I found later).
Printer now won't print and I have a flashing orange light next to the three coloured dots by the LCD screen.
Followed all the advice online about cleaning the contacts on both cartridges and printer head, no difference.
Did the HP reset (plug out of machine then out of wall, leave for 60 seconds, reconnect, no difference.
Any tech whizzes who know what might be going on?
TIA

This is perfectly normal behaviour for an inkjet printer. The quickest solution is to toss this printer and buy a new one. So far as I can tell, Brother printers seem to come with least hassle.

Thanks for the post. Yes, printers do seem to be ridiculously consumable these days. I bought this one a year ago to replace another one that became too tired to carry on after what felt like a few weeks.
I've had an online expert who assures me he's human giving me advice all afternoon. I was on the point of following your advice but I've decided to gamble another £28 on genuine HP cartridges which he thinks might help, but even he said the same thing as you. Thinks the cartridges have probably dried up despite being in sealed plastic bags. There comes a point annoyingly early on in the process where you just have to bin the hardware and start again. Mad.

I have found the answer to this.

My inkjet printer stopped working and refused every attempt to revive it. So I threw it out of a second story window into a snowy night in January, and told it that it had better buck its ideas up.

I bought it back in the next morning and it worked (I kid you not, no really, it did).

No printer has ever messed with me since.

You just have to let them know who is boss.

Brilliant, I'll give that a go, what have I got to lose? I might try a drop kick for extra manliness.

Certainly HP printer software problems often seem to resolve themselves overnight, even the laser I've got now will one out of ten times refuse to connect and I end up putting docs onto a flash drive and printing from USB.

Cartridge problems on inkjets don't normally just go away though and you can get in a right mess (sometimes literally) with out of date of non-original carts. Ours needed to be left on all the time so it could now and again do its little cleaning routine.

I assume you now leave the window open whenever you need to print something important?

Ours has been on all the time too and has been printing fine from both Macs but this cartridge replacement thing has really annoyed it. I've gone softly softly so far but I might go nuclear on its ass tomorrow if my £28 on new HP carts turns out to be good money after bad.

Delete the printer driver and then reboot. It should then reload the driver.

Hmmm where might that be? In Applications or some such? Sorry. I’m old.

Where did you buy it from?

I gave up on inkjets about 20 years ago. I've a 20 year old color laser that I'm likely binning soon, as I suspect it's beyond economic repair. Streaks on the output.

It probably won't get replaced; I've a 10 year old mono laser that's going strong. It gets used once every few months and outputs perfectly, first time every time.

edit - Amazon have a mono Brother laser printer for 75 quid.

If the cartridges don’t fix it today I’ll get a laser.

A good strategy may be to buy a cheap printer from Argos ( They are reasonably competitive) along with a three-year care plan.

Given that modern printers are so ste, it is almost a certainty that you will get a new printer every two to three years for only the cost of another service plan.

I have done this in the past wih inkjet printers. Mostly paper feed problems getting me a replacement.

Current one came from Argos as it happens. Suspicious it might have been sat in the warehouse for a while before I bought it, which would explain dry cartridges. Anyway we’ll see when the new ones arrive today.
