Anyone recommend a simple and reliable camera that I can use to keep an eye on my dog? I don't need to record, just a simple thing to check in with via phone app, as I intend to start leaving him for short periods initially now he's settled in, and gradually increase the times if he seems ok with it.

The simpler the better, this is the only thing I intend to use it for, unless I'm missing something else it would be useful for.

I have quite a few TP link Tapo cameras indoors and out. Known brand and are pretty good

We have a few c110 cameras that may suit you. They are cheap yes still provide a clear image at 2k resolution.

We already have the Amazon Ring doorbell and rear external camera, which have worked pretty well for us, so when we got a dog last year I bought an internal Ring camera too. Black Friday is coming up this month and they're always going cheap on Amazon then.

Whilst I pay a subscription for cloud storage of the recordings from the other 2 cameras (so I can watch them back later if need be), for the internal one we only use live view when the dog is left on it's own so there's no ongoing cost. Quality is v good, easy to set up with the Ring app too.

We have one of these to keep an eye on the dogs and it works great. App is simple and connects quickly and decent picture quality.

As opposed to our Ring doorbell. Nothing wrong with the quality or connection, but the app is st. If you click on an alert it takes you into the app, you have to click on the camera view you want and then you need to click again for live view. And then every other time it will remind you if you don't have a subscription so that's another couple of clicks. Maybe it's smoother if you sign up?

I have a few outdoor Blink cameras at home - they work extremely well and don't require any subscription to view the clips and cameras on the app from anywhere.

They even do a pet one.

I have an Anona Pano 4K cam, currently at £37.97 on Amazon. I use it to keep an eye on my O/H when she has a bad day (epilepsy). I can't fault it in any way though it sometimes scares the sh*t out of her when my voice speaks from it.

This. Buy a cheap but well known brands you can buy on the high street.

Avoid unknown chinese brands from Amazon/ebay. My brother bought a few which initially were great, then adverts started that you can't get past without closing the app multiple times. Contacting their support results in them telling you to purchase a monthly subscription to stop the adds.

I would also avoid Google nest cameras. We have a nest doorbell camera which was a few hundred £ but the camera events are all out of sync with the footage. You get a person detected (correctly) but you get a shot of a few minutes before the event.

Google Support gave us a temporary free subscription which works, but once that runs out we will be back to it only really working as a doorbell.
