Have I got a bug?

When I start up my PC, windows installer launches, without naming what it's trying to install. Then I get a pop up box saying that "Norton Anti Virus does not support the repair function. Please uninstall and reinstall".
My alarm bells are rining, so can anyone tell me how to find out what is trying to install itself, and/or if I have a problem?

What OS are you using?
If it's 2k/XP, right click on "My Computer" and select "manage" and have a look in your event viewers. This should show error messages and logs and (hopefully) what they relate to...I would expect to see anything that's trying to install (if it's legit) to show up in the application log.
