Hi All,

My PC is currently running like a dog for no apparent reason.

It's a 1.6Ghz intel with 1GB ram on XP. Running two IE windows and MS outlook, things start to grind to a halt!

Tired all the spyware virus software, so there doesn't seem to be anything on that front.

Currently have a 20GB HD with only 1GB free, not sure if that will start to have an effect.

Are there any free utils that show you how large all the files on the C: drive are ? I know I can go in through explorer, but I have to go through all the sub dirs.

Cheers

Michael

If you run a HDD to the edge of its capacity then you run out of places to put the swap file.

I would scandisk and defrag the HDD and then turn off Windows Virtual Memory Management and see what happens.

If that fixes the issue, go and buy another HDD and point the swap file at that if you dont have the confidence to run without one at all.

NT/2K/XP like a swap file to be present even if there is enough memory to go round.

Just a couple of pointers:-

You could do an advanced file and folder search, and specify it to only find large files, say anything over 3000kb. This may pull up a load of junk that you didn't know you had!

Also, the system restore may also be slowing things down somewhat, especially if you are nearing the limit to your hard disk capacity. Could always turn this off for now to free some space up too. To be honest, I never have the thing on anyway as it just uses resourses up.

I agree though that the swap file will be suffering if you're almost out of space. Buy a second hard disk for 20 quid or so and install that for all your files, leaving your main disk just for system stuff.
