Programs opened on start-up of Windows.....
Discussion
Will certainly slow down your PC/take up some available memory.
1. Start -> Run
2. Type msconfig and hit enter
3. Check the Startup tab and it lists all the programs
4. Untick any you don't want/need
(Above assuming it's either Windows 200x/XP)
Just make sure you know what you are unchecking.

Thanks mate. I'll check off the obvious ones and leave anything I don't recognise/understand!
They may be slowing down the start up but not necessarily slowing the PC down.
The way to turn off items that automatically start with Windows is to click Start> Run, then type msconfig into the dialog box> click Enter.
That will get you to MSconfig where you can click on the Start up tab, showing you what is set to start automatically with Windows.
Be careful what you turn off though, as Anti-virus and other important items will be there.
If you have Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 or 1.4 you can do the same thing buy starting Spybot Click Mode on the menu bar at the top and make sure advanced is check marked then on the side bar click tools> system start up and you will get the same list.
I find it easier to un-check items that I don't want to auto start using Spybot ( it usually gives you a decryption of what you are about to turn off!) so if you have it you might try that first.
Take care.

On XP you can just go Start > All Programs > Startup, select the ones you don't want and delete them.

That doesnt stop the entries in the registry from running programs...
