I'm moving house next week, I used to be with Blueyonder but they do not provide it in new area (Nor does NTL)

So a new BT phoneline it is for me, I'm interested in this PLUS.NET service, but have a few questions that do not seem apparently straight forward on their site (may just be me though)

1) Gonna go with the Plus service at £14.99 p/m for a 2Mb connection

Understand that bit

2) Choose your Contract, which one do I go for? this is the bit that is getting me confused most

It states Annual Contract - Included Activation-£0.00, but reading some of the fine print if I cancel I must pay them £47 in first year, then goes down in stages? Or is it better to pay up front?

I'm not likley to cancel unless the service is Cr4p, so is this the best option?

3) Choose your Hardware, I'm thinking of getting a NETGEAR DG834G Wireless ADSL router and USB WG111 for my lappie, Unless someone can suggest a slightly cheaper alternative? so I just select the "No Hardware option" yes?
Will the above Netgear stuff work OK with Plus.Net service ADSL I'm guessing it will as it is an ADSl Router, just repalces their Option to buy stuff yes?

Sorry about all the questions - thanks for any help/replies

PLus Net give great service, I have been with them 3 years and not a single blip. £14.99 well spent if you ask me, I wish I could cancel and rejoin!!!!!! Might have to threaten them with leaving and get my rate down...

Cheers Tuffer, do you use your own router? or get the one they provide?

If you get their 'free' modem, I believe it's USB and not ethernet, and you will have to pay the postage and packing for them to deliver it to you. AFAIK it's not a router, so you would have to share your internet connection via the PC that is connected to the modem.

I went for the same router as you but the WG311 wireless PCI card and chose no hardware from Plus Net themselves.

For God's sake DON'T go for that contract!! I made this mistake and needed to cancel within a year. There's some really small print somewhere on their site, which I didn't see, that states you're on a yearly contract and thus you have to pay the entire year's monthly subscriptions off as well as the initial activation cost. Thus it cost me nearly £180 to cancel

Cheers for all the info....

Thats the problem, I have been reading these Forums and everyone is moaning about nearly all the ISP's...

I will only be using the BB for "Surfing & "Email" anyway, with a very occassional download from say the TV section on here.

AS for the contract do I pay the £47 up front for a yearley contract or is it better to pay a Monthly contract fee.

I wish Blueyonder was in my new area, never had all this problem with them! No CAPS, 4Mbp connection etc....

Does anyone suggest another ISP that dosen't cost more than £20 p/m for a 2Mbp connection

I'm with Zen but @£35p/m for 2meg it's a little expensive for your needs

Freedom 2 Surf do some competitively priced packages, even AOL isn't too bad for a connecton (me waits for the howls of bloatware etc etc), whatever you choose it's always best to pay for the setup fee up front and to try to get a monthly contract, migrations are usually quite painless these days. Even frog modems (shudders) can be picked up off ebay for a couple of quid.

Post your requirements on Which Residential ISP on ADSL Guide and see what comes back.

Steer clear of Plus.Net until they get themselves back to the Customer Focused ISP they once were.
Too many subscribers and not enough capacity seems to be the orderof the day ATM, it may improve as Plus utilise more LLU though. It seems you do get what you pay for..........

no problems from Plus.net for me, been with them for 9 months or so on the 2mb service with a netgear wireless combo that i bought from elsewhere. Only use for email/surfing and the odd pistonheads.tv download and never hit any cap/pay extra limits

I seem to remember that when i signed up i could choose to have no contract but pay a one off fee upfront of something like £50, but then no cancellation charges. Don't know if that is still available?

I've been with Plus.net for a few months now and never had a problem. On ADSLguide website there a not many providers that beat them.

The basic £15 package will limited your P2P downloading speeds as it's a package tailored for surfing mainly. If you download lots of films/music/programs etc then you really want to consider the premier £22 package. With the premier pack you get 250mb of webspace, a static IP and a few other little percs.

I'd highly recommend them though. Reliable, friendly service and good price.

Another vote in favour of Plus from me.

I use them as my ISP at my office. (I have the £14.99 package, with no problem for useage with 5 machines running off the same 2Mb pipe)

I bought their wireless package, and got a BT 2100 modem & wireless router. Worked great then had problems with it dropping the wireless connection - called Plus & they sent out a replacement next day.

Excellent service in my book.

I recently joined Plusnet, and am pretty happy so far. Some people have been having disconnection problems recently, but Plusnet are working to resolve this. The ADSL connection is pretty stable otherwise, and the HTTP/FTP speeds (I'm on £15 Broadband Plus) are always good. If you want to do any P2P file sharing, then be warned that BBPlus is throttled to less than dial-up speeds (almost disabled). Either the BBPremier (£22) or BBPAYG (£15 for 1GB usage) tariffs should run at reasonable speeds if you need P2P.

Avoid the yearly contract as you must pay for the full 12 months if you leave early. It's £11.70 extra to set up a monthly contract, but well worth it for the flexibility. Plusnet will pay your migration fee if you are unhappy and leave within 45 days, but as some other ISPs charge nothing to migrate in, this will not save you any real money (£10-15 maybe).

When leaving you will still owe them the ADSL activation costs of £47 if your BT line had to be enabled. This reduces by £9.40 for every year you stay until year 5. But all ISPs will pass this initial charge onto you (either as a one-off when activated, or subsidised through the monthly costs).

I'd avoid the "free" modem and filters, as you have to pay £25 for them if you leave in the first year (reduces by £5/year as above). You're better of buying your own modem/router to suit your needs (wireless, firewall etc). ADSL filters go for £2 on eBay, and there's some cheap BT master socket faceplate filters (only 1 needed for entire house) going for less than £6 delivered (normally £15 from any online shop). Search for NTE5 in the item descriptions.

As someone mentioned above, adslguide.org.uk is the place to go for broadband info. Do a bit of research there and you should be OK.

I've used them for a bit over a year now.. no real problems, decent enough service, nice tools to play with on your homepage, and 200MB webspace which is a real bonus for me.

Also when you sign up you can say who referred you and they get a discount. use me use me! (I didn't see anyone else asking already and am surprised!? have they stopped this?). My username is knapplane. I think I added tuffer as my referral when I signed up so he should be getting £1 off per month or so. We can make a nice pistonheads chain of referrals..

AT work we have been with plusnet for over 5 years now. The only problems we have are with the communication between plusnet and BT. Basically BT ignore them. The only other problem we had was one of their staff giving blatently the wrong advice so I hung up and phoned back and got told "Well some of are staff are not as competant as others".... "What so some of your staff are incompetant!". But on the whole it's been 5 better years than the 1 year we had with BT....

At home I have used Plusnet for 4 years and they have been excellent.

In fact, I have just started a new contract with them for my business ADSL, and that went live a day before their planned "go live" date.

The good thing is, I will get a 50p a month off my home adsl, as I referred myself for the business one

Have done this for over eight of our reps so far, have another 22 to go 30 x 50p = £15 - £21.99 = £5.99 for 2Mb @ 20:1

Exactly what I have. The only problem is that I lose my connection for 2 minutes or so once or twice an hour. PlusNet have checked out the connection, can't find anything wrong. If anyone has had the same issue, I'd like to know how they got over it. I'm using a Sony Vaio with built-in 11b wireless and XP Pro, a Dell desktop with 11g wireless and XP Pro, sometimes also a PowerMac G5 and Powerbook (both latest models with 11g wireless).

Try a differrent ADSL modem. I had this problem when I first got ADSL years ago, and Plusnet told me my modem might be faulty. I got a replacement modem of the same model but the problem persisted. So I got a totally different make and model just to be sure, and it's been fine ever since. I guess the first modem just wasn't fully compatible with my hardware setup in relation to the ADSL connection.
