I have posted question before about not getting ebay on my laptop but I thought it was down to wireless connection but I have just connected up direct to cable & I still cannot access it (I can access fine on my desktop?) It is obviously something to do with laptop settings so far I have.

1/. disconnected the firewall still the same
2/. reset security settings in explorer to low

But I am still having no luck??

can anyone throw any light on why this is happening as it's pi***ng me right off!!!

Thanks
Howard

P.S As per previous posts I am pretty crap on computers so any explanation needs to be simple Thanks again.

Symptoms quite simple I can access all web sites that I normally visit with no problems at all but every time I try to get onto ebay the screen just won't load up! If I click on stop while i'm waiting i can see top half of ebay page but that is it. If I leave computer for about 10 mins it loads most of the page up where as on 2meg broadband all other sites are instant as is ebay on my desktop using the same connection??

Thanks
Howard.

I think you can rule out route and DNS problems then. Where did you get with the MTU change that was suggested on the other thread?

Who do you use to connect to the internet?
I had a similair issue some time ago, to resolve it i had to alter my internet settings on my laptop to connect through another NTL proxy server. Problem solved.

I connect through NTL & I didn't change MTU settings as I have no idea what they are or how to do it?

How would I change Internet settings as suggested?

Thanks
Howard.

First you need to find what Proxy servers are available in your area.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d. is a good place.

Next if you right click explorer and select properties click the connections tab. Go down to LAN settings, tick the use proxy server for your LAN box, then click Advanced next to it. type the address of the proxy server in the top box marked HTTP: and type 8080 into the port box. In the exceptions box in the bottom type 192.168.* then click OK twice, then click APPLY. You should now connect through this proxy server. if you still have problems try a different server normally just by changing the number in the proxy address (e.g...cache-3...) i have 4 to choose from i think.

No tried all that I tried all servers for manchester which is closest to me with still no joy?
Looks like one of my problems has finally stumped the experts!
What baffles me is I can access it fine from my desktop even if i use the same LAN connection & disconnect wireless the laptop will still not allow me onto site?? Weird!

Thanks for trying any other idea's gratefully received

Howard.

Are you trying to log in to the https: site?

Try the basic www.ebay.co.uk page - does that work?

Which OS are you using - if it's XP have you got SP2?

Assume you're using Internet Explorer - did you try Firefox, as someone suggested in your previous thread?

Try searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Nope ebay.com is the same ! It is unlikely to be a virus as the laptop is less than a week old & it hasn't worked on ebay since i got it.

Thanks

Interesting one this link works fine & I can access my ebay home page through it but I still can't perform any searches or use any of my favourites links??
Looks like we may be getting close??

Thanks

For an easy to use program to change MTU settings, see here: www.dslreports.com/drtcp
There's also a 'tweaks' tester there too www.dslreports.com/tweaks.

From the other comments that you've just made it does sound like a DNS problem but it's a bit weird that another computer on the same connection works. Are they both set to obtain IP address and DNS address automatically?

Ok an update I am away from home for a few days & have discovered that I can access ebay no problem on my dial up connection so therefore the issue is something with home NTL broadband? What I don't understand is why is my desktop ok but not my laptop with the same connection (even if i disconnect wireless & use same lan line)

This just gets weirder!!

Thanks
howard.

Not being an expert or anything, but are you allowing cookies in the internet settings on your Laptop?

From the symptoms I think you can rule out cookies, routing and DNS related causes, because you are getting the first part of the page. I think the original suggestion of the MTU setting is the most likely suspect. If you don't understand what that means then Google for "MTU setting".

Right done that (although not sure what i'm doing!) & it makes no difference. I have changed mtu setting to 1500 as advised in previous post. Where do I go next??
As per yesterdays post it works fine on dial up but as of today I have the same problem on my desktop for the first time so what can it be!!
This is really driving me mad if anyone can really help I would appreciate it

Thanks
Howard.
