Hey All,

Advice needed on a free/shareware app that'll simply monitor and log all internet usage on a machine. I don't want anything fancy, and certainly don't want to piss about installing a 30 day trial of Surf Control (or indeed trying to endure the sales calls) - anyone got any suggestions?

Are you trying to see what people are using, or stop them from using it...?

Well, I'm going to try the first, use a mangerial style to get them to refrain before having to arse about locking stuff down (obvioulsy which then turns into them spending further time curcumventing the lockdown)...

On an individual machine, or network wide through a router/gateway?

Would ISA Server be a sledgehammer/nut interface?

GPo, ISA, et al is rather the Sledgehammer and Nut scenario - as the company is rather small I work on a trust basis, only stepping in when people tak ethe piss.

ISA would be great, but inevitably to big a tool for monitoring. GPO would be my first step, but then its all administration and documentation that I'd have to to do in order that I don't forget what I've created further on down the line.

Ultimatly its one or two oiks spending OT to surf the web, and just a text file log would suffice...

Podie, I know how you think, and yes, it's the perfect solution. For many thousands of users

there is a sniffer product that you can download for a free trial it will catch ALL traffic going through a HUB and log it by IP. I used it when we had trouble. Dead easy to use no interfereance needed on the persons machine and doesn't effect the network just install on a machine and re route your router through a hub before getting to the switch with that machine on.

Now all I need to do is remember the name...

www.globalpatrol.net

It does exactly what it says on the tin. Free for 30 days

Nice one, I've a managed switch that I can use for it, so I'll get it setup - thanks James!

If anyone does have any other suggestions I am always all ears...
