Internet Problem
Discussion
Over the last few days I have been having problems with my internet. I am connecting through an alcatel ADSL "modem" (its blue and looks like a manta ray). I am running win2k.
When I connect to the internet, within seconds normally, the lights go out on the modem and the connection stops recieving or sending. If I try to close the connection in windows with the modem still attached, windows crashes. I have 2 seperate sets of USB ports, when I lose the connection, anything else on the same USB port set fails too, just like the modem.
I have run an AVG scan a few times with the latest updates and while it found a few (read, a lot of) nasties that norton missed, it hasnt solved the problem. I have also reinstalled the modem drivers a few times and tried it on all the USB ports.
The next steps are to try a different modem or to reinstall windows.
Before I try anything so drastic, does anyone on here have any idea of what might be causing it or possible fixes. I dont want to spend the weekend internetless

Sounds like the USB ports can't supply enough power to the modem, I know some people had similar problems with the Speedtouch modems as they're pretty power hungry for a USB device.
Have you added any new USB devices recently that could just be tipping it over the edge? I'd try unplugging every other USB device and see if it works then or even better try and beg, steal or borrow a powered USB hub and connect it through that, which will fix any power related problem.
Not sure why it'd just break like that if you haven't changed anything on your PC though, could be a sign your power supply is on the way out I guess but I'd expect more general system instability from that.
