I have Norton Anti Virus installed on my PC (it was there when I bought it). My subscription is up for renewal at a cost of £35. Before I renew should I consider any other alternatives?

Thanks

Paul

Some of my colleagues in the security biz recommend a product from NOD32 for windows applications. I use ClamXAV for my Mac

I started with Norton, moved to McAfee, and now use AVG. Best deal for me as I have a number of computers to protect, Virtual or otherwise, and a small network licence is reasonable (and for 2 years) plus the network administration is easy with AVG.

Norton in particular was incredibly complex, even to uninstall, and McAfee too intrusive.

How many viruses does it stop, I thought there weren't any dangerous OSX ones in the wild...

I moved from Norton 2003 to AVG and ran a scan. It immediately picked up a couple of virii that Norton had obviously repeatedly missed.

It's not picked anything up yet.

I have it set to run once a week + scan incoming mail. I have a folder on my desktop where all downloads are routed to & every time a new file is added it auto scans that too.

It doesn't appear to be a resource hog & I would rather be safe than sorry.

Register another vote for AVG.

I installed in 2 days ago and it picked up loads of nasties that norton was oblivious to. Im totally converted now

I use Sophos due to getting it free from work

Basically, the company uses Sophos and the licence allows it to be installed on any employee's home pc's as well.

Maybe worth speaking to your IT Dept.

Another thumbs up for AVG from grisoft - I've been using it on 3-4 pc's for the last 3 years and have yet to be infected by any virus.

Cheers

Thanks guys. I'm going to install AVG. Do I need to uninstall Norton first? I seem to recall I had a problem before when I had two AV programmes installed and they screwed up the system.

Thanks again.

Slightly lesser-known AV software - F-Prot. (www.f-prot.com).

From your favourite Icelandic software company...

Designed to be algorithmically very fast, so your machine doesn't slow to a crawl whenever you save a file/get an email etc etc.

We use Bullguard at our company. You get AV, firewall and an online backup service for £30 and you get a licence to put it on 3 PC's.

We have found it to be very good at it's job and not much of a resource hog.

The AV component is based on the BitDefender engine and the firewall is based on Sygate.
