just got back home and plugged in my laptop to my home internet connection and it runs really really slowly, literally it almost wont load up internet pages. when on a connection at uni it runs fine.

also we have a pc which runs on the same connection (which is a 2.2mb connection btw) and this runs fine

does anybody know why the laptop is running slowly?

the laptop is not running off the pc its a seperate line on the same connection

thanks

Only a guess, but what ip addresses have the two home machines got, 'cause it sounds like they've somehow got the same one.

It would tell you if there was an IP conflict.

TO be honest, it could be all sorts of stuff.

what info do you need matey?

both running xp
one is a pc the other a laptop

using 2 seperate adsl voyager 100 bt modems, into the same socket.

as i said i cannot work out why the laptop is lagging as we had them on another connection (exactly the same but a different telephone socket) and they both worked fine.

basically just use an rj45 cable thats plugged into my network card, then goes into the wall, setup a home network and bobs my uncle.

do you reckon there is a conflict between how they are set up?

the modem here is just a usb modem

Spyware. Google for Spybot search and destroy. Load it, update it and run it. Chances are something's grabbing your bandwidth in the background.

Polarbert, why the two seperate adsl voyager 100 bt modems? Only need one.

If, as I think you are doing, you are unplugging the one attached to the desktop from the wall socket and then plugging in the one on your laptop, that may be the issue here.

The config on the desktop and that on the laptop may be different. I'd say go through them both and double check... just in case you haven't already that is :/

At UNI it's different. There you are jumping onto the UNI's network and are then routed out to the internet. You'll possibly have access to some of the resources on your UNI's intranet.

the thing which has got me miffed is that i used to do it before we moved the computer and it worked fine on both machines

well im back home again!

and i chose the easy way by just networking my laptop to the pc via an rj45 crossover cable

its still annoying me though why it doesnt work when i connect my laptop directly to the net, does anybody know what may be up?
