purely hypothetical all this...

If one was to try & DVDshrink , say, Amadeus, and the program, say, reported a DVD copy protection error half way through the session.. what could a chap possibly do, in theory ?

I expect he'd be just backing up his favourite film, thats it.

Try dvd4free running in the background. I have heard this solves many of these problems with Nero don't know if it will help woth DVDshrink

Alternatively install earlier version of DVDshrink. Version 2.3 seemed to ignore most protection issues.

If such a person were hypothetically attempting to back up their own DVD collection so they could take a unimportant copy of the road with them whilst going on holiday or something.

I would perhaps tell them to look Edit > Prefernce > File I/O options and to perhaps disable the region checking of RPC2 drives and maybe play with some of the other settings in there.

One would use "DVD Decryter" in file mode first before using DVDshrink to shrink the files and burn the backup!

Try cleaning the DVD, then shutting off PC and try again. This worked for me on a couple of occasions when making my spare version .

Tell that to those that own the production rights to those films... If they had thier way, you'd only be alowed to watch the film a set number of times, or even up to a specific date and then no more.

Under UK law though, well as it stands at the moment at least, you are entitled to make a backup so long as it is for personal use and that you retain the orriginal. Least way's that is how I understand it. If I'm wrong let us all know... plz

Sony, WB and a lot of the others are trying to stop the Yo Ho Ho software and movie companies by busting our balls and preventing us from carrying out legitamate backups.

DVD Shrink will do the lot - no need at all for DVD decriptor, if I buy a Region 1 disc, I'll back it up so I can watch it on my region locked DVD in the living room, as far as I'm concerned, I bought the DVD and I can do what I like with it, as long as I don't sell copies, which I don't.

The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society has this to say about music CD's, and I suspect the same applies to DVD's

Am I allowed to copy my own CD’s at home for personal use?

No, any copy of a musical work, without the relevant licence is an infringement of copyright and therefore illegal, even if only for personal use.
