Safe removal of camera connnection
Discussion
Being of average stupidity, I connected my digital camera to my PC to transfer pictures and without thinking, turned off the camera and removed it from the USB connection.
My bright relative then pointed out that I should have used the "safe removal " system on XP to ensure no harm was done to the PC. Oooer.
She then tested various procedures to remove the camera connection and eventually her laptop crashed.
So what do you folks do?
Allow the camera to complete the download then switch it off and remove the connection or...........
Turn off the camera then use the safe removal system before disconnecting the lead or.............
Leave the camera switched on and use the safe removal system to stop all activity. My cuz tells me her camera emits a noise when she does this but mine doesn't. No apparant harm done to her Fuji digital in spite of the noise.

You should use the safe-removal then disconnect the camera. This is because the computer may not have finished reading from or writing to the camera, even though it says it has.
I think all that can really happen if you just disconnect is that some of the files won't be moved across, and will remain on the camera.
You'll should be fine if you want a few seconds before unplugging.
It should not be possible to crash the computer by disconnect any USB device, unless the drivers are crappy

I must admit I always just yoink em out which probably isn't best practice, but I've never done any damage.
XP has 2 USB disk modes, one using cacheing, which though faster is more likely to leave corrupt data or result in data loss if pulled. The other doesn't so if you pull it whilst it's copying obviously the file won't make over but no damage can be done.
