Later on I will mostly be installing a new harddrive into a friends pc whose current hard drive is down to < 300mb of space. The new drive is far bigger and I want to transfer the whole working system including os to the new drive to make it boot from it and then prob format the old drive and use it as a slave. I was planning on using my copy of Norton Ghost but would appreciate any other suggestions or hints if I'm likely to get any probs.

Norton Ghost is by far the best way, and fastest method of transfer.

For everyone elses information : Take the new drive and hang it off the secondary IDE or SATA and boot from Floppy. It runs from 3.5" disk. If you are stuck for it, email me!!

I "Clones" the entire hard disk and boot partition in one sitting and takes a drive of about 40GB 4 mins to complete it!

I once built 700+ workstations with NT4 for a college for Y2K projects, this method way by far the best!

I am installing UNIX onto the SGI in the classifieds right now!! Shame there's no GHOST for UNIX

Hi thanks for the comments. I've started Ghost (v 9.0) from my PC within Windows and it gives me the option to "Copy One Drive to Another", do I still need a floppy dos boot, is this a newer version or am I way off the mark? cheers

Joolz, I think V9 will create a boot disk for you. but I think I remember that it restarts into DOS from windows. It will be fine, just go for it. the only consideration is make sure you clone "old to new drive" or you will loose the lot if you get it the wrong way round!!!!

Here's the desktop of IRIX I am installing!

Its a 64 Bit OS, and the Octane has 2 x 64 Bit CPUs. Remember Shrek the animation was done on this system.

Thanks Justin I'll press the ok button and hope for the best, thanks for the warning getting the drives round the right way too, I will double double check first as otherwise I'll be in big trouble if I f up and there's little way of backing up first.

That graphic stuff is way beyond me, I tried to get to grips with 3DSMax once and got nowhere in 3 days.
