I got a 60 GB iPod for my birthday today.
The only problem (so far...) is that when I try to save songs from CD to the hard disk to then transfer on to the iPod, I'm finding that the software hangs as it's finishing off the save of the last song. The song in question is then listed in the directory, but the file isn't complete and so it doesn't appear in the iPod playlist.
I tried registering with the iPod support site, but for some reason the Apple server isn't accepting new registrations - an "unknown error", apparently.
So does anyone have any good ideas? Is there any way to avoid this happening? Or is it some kind of weird security feature?

That sounds like it could be it. After all the last track on CP discs is the 'data' track which has included in it. the software necessary to play a CP disc.
When you first installed the disc into your PC did itask you to install this software? If it does, always press 'Cancel' or 'No' then use a ripping software like AudioGrabber or Acohol 120%.

Thanks guys.
I'm not sure that is the problem, though. I've been tinkering with the software this evening, and trying to load older CDs. The older CDs have the same problem.
The interesting thing is that the tracks are saving to the hard disk but then simply failing to be added to the playlist. If I then import only the final track, and as it's importing, select a random second track to be imported and then cancel the import of that second track, it imports the final track with no problems.
Could it be some kind of buffer overrun error or something?

Assuming the CD has been saved to the hard disc(after being named) try this:
With itunes covering half your screen, go to My Documents > My Music > itunes > itunes music > artist folder > album folder and simply drag the album folder in to the middle of your itunes desktop. All the tracks should go in to itunes in one go?

I'll give it a go when I've got the laptop switched on. Thanks you two! I owe you both a beer at the next meet.
One last question (I'm such an iPod numpty...) - do I really have to keep all the songs on my hard disk as well? Can I not save them to the iPod and then delete them from the HDD? Or will they disappear from the iPod as well if I delete them?

If you have your ipod set to auto update then you will lose the tracks if you delete them from your hard drive. Go to preferences, ipod, and select the "manually manage songs" radial button. You can then keep what you like on your hard drive and a different what you like on your ipod.
NB - I lost 20gigs worth of music when my 40 gig ipod died as all the songs were not backed up on my hard drive (only a 40 gig drive in my laptop). I subsequently had to re- rip my cds. :notahappybunnysmilie: Don't rely on your ipod - always back up if you can (external USB hard drives are fairly cheap - my 120 gig one was 80 notes).

you won't lose any songs that you take off your hard drive providing they are 'current' in your iTunes library. However, once you delete or clear them from iTunes the next time you connect the iPod they will go.

How do I make them "current"?

Thanks Jinx, I hadn't thought of backing it all up to an external HDD. I've got an old one here that I've just dusted off.
If I manage all the songs manually, I should then be able to update them as I go and not have them update automatically when I connect up the iPod, is that right?
Sorry. Told you I was an iPod numpty.

It is worth having music on your hard disk anyway, if you lose/damage the ipod you have lost the lot.
Don't know how you like to play your music but when you import music say from a CD, you do not have to import the whole CD, you can cherry pick. This will reduce the amount of storage space needed for your collection on both ipod and hard disk. You no doubt know this already but itunes can import music in many formats, if it is set to import as WAV files instead of mp3 they take up 10x the space.

Yep - if you manage all the songs manually you end up treating your ipod as just another playlist in itunes. I have my music library on my external hard drive (approx 60 gig at the moment) and empty and fill my ipod when I'm bored of the 20 gigs of music I have on there.

20 gigs?!
I've not even managed one yet.
Sorry to be thick, but I still can't see how to manage the songs manually. What do I need to change in iTunes and the iPod itself to do that? I've got the external hard disk installed, I just need to know now what to change so that I don't lose all the stuff I've already saved.

In itunes select the second menu along (can't remember off the top of my head what it is called). At the bottom should be a menu item called Preferences select that and a sub window with tabs should pop up. If your ipod is attached one of the tabs should be called ipod this should have a list of options including automatically update or manage songs manually - not sure what the exact wording is. Click on the manually radial button and it will come up with a warning saying something like "are you sure you want to do this - only a thickie would want to manage their own playlists and decide what music they want, surely you want the nice people at apple to determine what you listen to" I am paraphasing a bit After you have agreed that you want to handle your music in your own way you then just use itunes as a mp3 file manager.
To point itunes at specific directories (e.g. if you have moved any files onto your external drive) Just use the import folder option and point itunes in the right direction.

Aha! I get it now. I was looking for this option without connecting the iPod first. Doh!
Thanks Jinx. You're a star!!
