Anyone know how to read a file from a drive which has a dynamic drive overlay MBR if you're not booting from the drive but using it as a secondary drive?

It's currently in an old laptop which doesn't have a USB port and I can't connect via the parallel port as it's only 4 bit!

When I take the drive out and add it to my newer laptop via a USB controller I can't access the drive.

I take it it's pretty old school?

I think ontrack came with a boot floppy to use in these situations, so you could boot from the floppy, it would load the translation stuff, then continue to boot from the HDD. Could be imagining this though.

Could you use the infra-red port to transfer the files? pretty straightforward under win98+

How big are the files?

AFAIK, if you slap it into a Linux box, you should be able to access the data & at least transfer it over to another drive... if you mount it read-only you will also not risk any accidental erasing or overwriting (unless you try really, really hard )

Thanks.

I'm now thinking of shoving the drive into my desktop and booting from it then transfering files to the desktop slave HDD.

Problem is my desktop is burried in the spare room aka junk store!
