changin leased lien provider...
Discussion
We run a very busy website in the Publishign domain. We are changing our leased line provider in the near future.
Thsi will mean that our external facing IP ranges will all change - and hence there will be a disruption for people resolving our DNS name to the new IP as it takes time for all the DNS servers to update.
Plus we have people accessing our site vis proxy servers where they have apparently added us as an IP rather than domain name - so these will need manually updating.
Any tips on how we can minimise the disruption?
We should be keeping the old circuit for a while, so one thought I had was to simply dangle a web server oof it that did a re-direct
www.name.com/whatever redirects to 111.111.111.111/whatever if the users DNS or proxy is not updated. obviously no redirect required if it has!
for a while until all DNS and proxy servers have been updated?
Any other ideas?
TIA

Here's what we did - update the DNS records so that they are only cached for 1 hour. Do this at least 2 weeks before the changeover.
Then when the change occurs, switch the IP in the DNS record, then make the changeover to the new provider. By the time you've been through switching IPs, routers, etc etc, the DNS change should have propogated thanks to the 1hour cache time you set earlier on.
Now change the cache value back to it's prior setting. Job done.
There may be better ways, but that's the way we used. I'll leave it up to others to improve on this method!
