Anyone got any experience of these two laptops?

I want the 1280 resolution which both have. Need it to do sw dev, no need for games or multimedia... any advice?

Both come to about 600 quid btw.

Cheers,

Mark

Do you want to use the lappy as a "desktop replacement" or as a mobile office?

I have had a 6000 for about a week now. On the whole, I am pleased with it but there are a few comments:

Screen is very good but web pages are very small at the native resolution but it is nice to have 2 pages of a document side by side at the same time, or a nice big reading pane in Outlook.

Can't swap the drive bay for a second battery, which is a shame.

Also, the fan runs all the time which can be a bit off putting and mine has a high pitched squeal already which I am less than impressed with.

Other than those minor points, the keyboard is good to use and certainly better than the HP NC6000 that I use for work....
If you have any detailed queries, then drop me a PM,
Glen

It got the 6000 a few months ago and have been very pleased with it. Great value for money. As already mentioned, the keyboard is surprisingly good. I got the 1680x1050 screen and that is also excellent, although some things become quite small. I imagine this would be worse still on the 1900xsomething screen but not such a problem with the 1280. I've not tried the other machine you mention though so I can't give constructive advice on one over the other I'm afraid.

Glen YHM.

GP - I would only take the 1280 screen anyway as that's what I'm used to and don't really want to make the text that small as I'd largely be doing dw dev on it and it gives me enough headaches as it is

They both seem pretty good and I don't need the better graphics card of the 6000 but a bigger screen is a bigger screen after all however the smaller size of the 630 means it's a better proposition for lobbing in my rucksack, carrying it on my motorbike, using it on a train etc etc.

What processors did you chaps go for?

Don't blame you about the screen. This is only justable. A useful feature on mine is the dual monitor support so you can have an extra screen independant of the laptop's. I got the ATI Radeon X300 card so I am unsure whether you can do this with the base version. Quite useful though.

I got the slowest Centrino processor (1.73Ghz?) and it is fine for everthing I get up to. GTA San Andreas is the most intensive game I've tried playing and it runs fine on max resolution.

With regards to an additional battery, I thought you could remove the blanking panel under the PCMCIA slot and stick an extra one in there. Not tried it though so I might be talking balls.

My company prevents access to hotmail from corporate sites, but I will get back to you as soon as I get some less restrictive web access!

I've been playing on the 6000 for just over a week now.

I opted for the higher res screen though at 1680x1050 and the 128mb GFX

The fan on mine is almost silent, even watching video on it,

The keyboard is quite good, a little bigger than my last laptop too, but can sound a little rattly when typing quickly.

I opted for the bigger battery too at time of order, it managed just over 5 hours the other day doing the mundane stuff, i'd imagine it'll be a little less if it was gaming.

I also opted for the 1.73 centrino, which is a damn site faster than the 2.4 p4 it's replaced

Thanks guys. I measured up my old 4000 and it would appear to be slightly larger than the 630m and quite a bit smaller than the 6000 which worried me a bit. However the spec of the 6000 is better and I need to measure it up and see if it'll go in the top box of my bike and then decide which one to go for.

Mark
