Anyone used one of the little soldering irons.

What sort of work, is it capable of?

Just PC boards or car wiring alarms immobilisers etc

The coldheat pro seems to be fairly heavy duty.

£15 too, think I may finally chuck my butane job.

Mine does up to 1mm solder, but struggles a bit with it I must say.

tried tinning some random bits of wire, but it seems a bit wanting

Really? - I can't see how this thing has much capacity, I mean in terms of power (Watts).

I've got an old Weller 24V/AC 45 Watt TCP jobbie for years and it's seen me through just about everything I've ever needed to do, and occaisionally I find it lacks the grunt to get out enough heat, especially if you want to solder to plate metal.

But 45W - that's a huge amount of power - how can something that's running off AA batteries even come close?

Took it back,
after several attempts at tinning wire using only the power of thought for heat,
I concede defeat,
and pay a bit more for a butane powered device,
that certainly will solder.

I can recommend Metcal soldering irons. Probably abit overkill though
