Got home last night to find my home computer infected with hundreds of adaware/pop ups. The ones that covers your desktop etc.

I ran Adaware and Trend Anti Virus and I seem to have gotten rid of the majority of them, been through the registry and manually removed everything I can find, been through the prefetch and removed everything I can find. But I'm still getting damn pop ups all through the day.

What can I use to find and get rid of these??

I'm getting around one every couple of minutes. I'm even getting them through firefox. I can't find anything anywhere. I'm off to get McAfee secuerity suite now as it seems that what I had in place wasn't good enough, but can some one please help me get rid of these pop ups? I had to delete quite a few things out of System 32 last night as they were infected.

Should I think about a repair install?

Thanks

Chris

Nope, get a copy of HijackThis (free) and run it to find the BHO's and other bad bits. You'll want to run it in safe mode as some of the processes monitor each other and respawn if you delete one.

Delete your temporary internet files and empty your temp directory and recycle bin in safe mode too.

A reinstall from a clean disk is always an option. However, I'd try a few more anti-spyware programs first as in my experience it usually takes more than one to clean a PC. Try here for a review of various products that should help.

You mentioned Trend Micro in your post - do you have the Internet Security package including a firewall? If so, I'm keen to know how your PC got so badly infected considering that you seem to know what you're doing?!

Check the following:
- Firewall is properly operational.
- Latest IE and Windows patches have been applied.
- Install the NoScript and AdBlock Plus (not just AdBlock) and related Firefox extensions to improve security.
- Clean your Internet temporary files and all cookies from IE and Firefox (if this isn't too inconvenient).
- Latest anti-virus patterns are installed.

Let us know how you get on.

Worth downloading Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Spybot if you are still having troubles. You could also use AVG anti-virus - all these are available as free downloads.

Do check that your Adaware is up-to-date, as you may have some pop-ups that are newer than the definitions that its using.

Try AVG antivirus, its free AVG Free

Try stinger free trojan detector/remover from mcafee Stinger

All else fails, disconnect from the net (should hopefully prevent pop-ups), backup, repartition, format and reinstall.

But probably best you don't. Very easy to make a complete badger's arse of it and end up with a windows install more knackered than the one you started with.
