No, it's not a legal requirement, although it may be a contractual requirement by the registrar for the domain. Nominet, who administer .uk allow individuals to withhold their details. However, it appears that no-one ever checks these things and a recent article I read somewhere said that a lot of the "whois" details in the DNS are obviously made up.

You're right, no one does check on the whole, but if someone DOES report you, and the details are false, the domain is Deleted!

Simple as that.. I know as i've reported a few people before and watched the domains go bye bye.

Verisign doesn't allow Opt-Out, but the Terms stipulate only that Legitimate details are used, so you can use ANY legitimate contact details, so long as you can be reached via them.. that's how these 'Whois Hider' services work.. They assign you a random string email address, and use their contact details for the public facing aspect. They simply relay any emails to you.

On the first domain I registered I filled out my correct details. As its my CV site I dont mind but the later 2 I registered, I opted out of releassing the details in the whois for one and gave false details on the other (it was a porn site - not exactly keen on giving away details - and yes the material was of girls over 18, and no I barely covered hosting costs so in my case not worth the effort).
