Hi All

I just patched one of our 2003 Servers to SP1, and then its stopped accepting connections and saying the server is unavailable. So i removed the SP and its still doing it ! The 2nd server in the farm has also stopped, and they are both load balananced for the published app !? When i re-add the farm its the same problem.

What can i check on the servers?

Help !!

Hi Steve, in no particular order:

1. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en
2. Can you RDP to the server?
3. Can you get a response from the ICA listener by telnetting to 1494?

When you say "stopped accepting connections", do you get an error? What about in the server event logs?

Have you done anything to the second server that would cause it to stop working? Are you sure it isn't a load balanced app. just going to server A all the time?

Are direct (ICA) server connections affected as well as published apps?

If both have stopped "working", is the problem licensing, rather than 2K3 SP1? What version of Presentation Server are you using?

- Any errors at boot up?
- Any services set to 'Automatic' but not started?

You are of course talking about your test environment here aren't you? You haven't gone straight to production with a change?

Do you use Speedscreen Latency Reduction? It needs hotfixing to work with SP1 and could be causing your issue...do you have a Dr Watson error in your event log for every attempted application launch?

There are no obvious errors in the event viewer.

Just tried a ICA connection to the desktop and its saying that the citrix server is not accepting connections.

I'm not an expert with citrix so i am a bit in the shite here!! lol

How do you test the port again, was it telnet ?

From a command prompt:

Telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 1494 <enter>

You should get a screen full of:

ICAICAICAICAICA....

If that doesn't work, what about RDP (assuming it is enabled server side)?

ok telnet to port 1494 doesnt work on both, although port 80 does on both.

RDP works on both now i have enabled it..

now this is weird - just tried telnet again and its working (getting the ica). Farm is back and i can get in. Does the RDP service tie into citrix ??? Thats got to be whats causing it ?

OK...well there's the problem

Can you telnet to 1494 from the machine itself (i.e. rule out any firewall/routing type problems)

If you run Citrix Connection Configuration, do you have an ICA-TCP listener configured? (Start -> Run -> MFCFG.EXE)...

you should have something like:

Status Connection Name Transport Type
Enabled ica-tcp tcp Citrix ICA 3.0
Enabled rdp-tcp tcp Microsoft RDP 5.2

Well that's good (that it's working again)

When you say "does RDP tie into Citrix"...no it doesn't but Terminal Services does, so disabling Remote Desktop would cause some problems.

Are the questions:

- When will you be sending in the invoice?
- How much for a support contract?

Only kidding...well the first one anyway!

Telnet is attempting to establish a telnet session (rather than ICA), and the Citrix server is attempting to handshake (the ICAICAICAICA stuff you see) and after a minute or so (never actually timed it), it gives up trying to establish a new ICA session.

Other sessions remain unaffected.

Aha so thats normal - excellent !

I should push the boss into getting me a citrix course, as i have build these two blades up and i have winged it as usual...so far thats been fine, but its when these sorts of things appear that i am up shit street !!

I wonder if i can somehow disable the RDP on the servers? Although these servers are behind a 2nd firewall before getting onto the net its still a bit of a security risk surely !!?

Go back a couple of posts - use Citrix Connection Configuration (MFCFG.EXE) to disable (or delete) the RDP-TCP listener from there.

There are probably a host of other things, like anonymous accounts, standard file & registry permissions, comms encryption etc that could do to be addressed as well. And that is before we get onto lights out builds, overall architecture design etc etc.

A Citrix course (or two or three) would be a good idea, but IMHO it won't tell you most of what you want to know, and will cost your boss £1500+ as well as a week out of the office.

Is your implementation completely home grown, or do you have an existing relationship with a reseller/consultancy? They should be able to provide better assistance and IMHO better value.

Of course, I would say that, as it is what I do for a living!

Morning !

Our environment was implemented some time ago and was/is a bit of a mess though years of neglect and poor administration by other people. I'm in the process of updating and improving its efficiency/reliability. I've recently replaced 2 Metaframe XP servers (2000 Server) for these 2 new Presentation Server 4 servers on 2003 Server so thats how i've become the owner/administrator of the environment. I think i might try and milk a course or two out of work as they should give me training really (plus i want the skills on the CV)

I might have a crack at disabling RDP later on once my hangover has subsided Cheers for that help yesterday - saved me a load of hassle!
