This type of thing:

Very tidy piece of design. I'd love to be able to do something similar for PH.

Anyone got any experience of doing something similar or reckon they could develop such a system?

It's done in flash. You could do something similar in javascript.

Functionaly yes, but it would be very difficult to present it this well.

As a matter of interest, why not?

Are the adverts not already flash based?

A few.

Anyway... thought it would be a neat feature regardless of what technology is used.

Must agree with Pigeon, although not in quite such muted and subtle terms...

I don't have Flash myself, but I volunteer to produce a non-Flash alternative for PH!

No Flash on PH please

Cheers

Fair enough, but at I'd be interested to know why. Is that BBC implementation not good?

I'm no web expert, but since no-one else has answered, I'l venture a guess that it's because it doesnt scale well at different screen resolutions (i.e. you can't change the font size etc), isn't possible to navigate without a mouse, and isn't possible to use with screen readers and the like (for disabled people). But it is very swish! and these may or may not be issues for you

Philosophicaly, and in terms of pure web standards and accessibility issues, Flash can be frowned upon. It is much abused, but when used well, as by the BBC in this instance, you'll be hard pushed to get a better solution for general use. Gracefull fallback to a javascript driven form, if flash not installed is nice though.

Yep, fair enough points but for a fun element of a site, and implemented as well as it is on the BBC site I don't see the problem.

I can do a spot of Flash-ing

If it's just something like that should be easy enough
And if it is an 'optional' part of the site then yeah shouldn't see Flash being much of a problem. Never been bothered by it myself..

Dave.
