Fed up with hundreds of CDs littering up the place so I intend to rip them all and put them on a laptop. This will be a dedicated machine permanently linked to my gramaphone thingy.

Good/Bad idea?

I realise I will need a big H/D, but what about the spec for the rest of the macine?
Any recommendations? A used machine would be OK. Perhaps if you gentlemen have the time and inclination you could point me towards something on Fleabay.

For the cost of the laptop - you could have a far superior Hush or Shuttle - Media Centre pc , mp3, dvd, divx,tv tuner etc...

Would agree with this

As far as the spec of the laptop would go, a big HDD, average sound card and ummm - that's it...

Or how about one of these

And one of these

Much more storage space than a laptop, and neater/smaller/quieter.

Why not just an ipod or similar. Up to 60GB available so they will hold a pretty big collection, docking cradle things also available which can stay connected to your stereo and then you also have the ability to take it with you on your travels as well.

I have had a squeezebox for a number of years and it's superb. Just dump all of your mp3 on to a pc on a network, job done.
