What a prize pillock I feel!

After restoring my PC back to its original setting last night (now working a treat by the way), I decided to install my newly purchased 'GT Legends' for a bit of late night gamage.

In great anticipation, I waited for it to install only to be greeted with an error message...

On closer inspection of the box, the game runs on Windows 2000 and XP.

Well that aint gonna work on my Windows Me then, is it?

D A R W I N

The question is...

How do I go about upgrading. Do I need to buy 2000 / XP software or can it be downloaded/upgraded?

And will it mean restoring again?

Cheers

You will need to buy a copy of XP or 2000. You can get an upgrade from Win ME which will be cheaper, but it's a bit of a pain as you will need to insert your ME disc any time you have to reinstall XP.

www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/matrix.mspx

It should keep everything on your machine the way it is, pretty much.

Buy a copy of XP or 2000 but go to a pc shop and get the oem version with a couple of sticks of ram as the more, the better. Windows works out fairly cheap then, I think about £80 for the OEM version.

BLOODY HECK !

I've just checked out the price to get XP. Its £90 just for the upgrade and another ton to get the complete pack.

GT Legends has just become an expensive purchase. Anybody out there with the software that I could 'borrow' ?

Failing that, anybody want to buy GT Legends for £25 ?

Right then. What is OEM and why is it the same thing but cheaper?

On a completely unrelated note.....there's some software called Bit Torrent which allows you to download various software off other people. Some people even share copies of operating systems on there, very naughty.

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer, it basically refers to software/ hardware that comes without retail packaging (which is why it's cheaper), it's designed for people like Dell to fit in their machines.

XP OEM £58.74 plus a couple of quid for shipping here

There are many copies of Operating Systems on BitTorrent but quite a few are dodgy and will cause you problems. Buy the OEM version - but beware XP needs a minimum of 256MB RAM to work and I always fit 512MB minimum when buiklding a machine as 256MB isnt enough to make the machine run to its full potential.

Yes it is. A bit of a hobby-horse of mine, but if you don't steal your shopping, and you don't steal your clothes, then you shouldn't steal software IMO.

If you needed a £90 part to keep your car running, would you steal it, or would you grit your teeth and pay for it?

Fair points - I wouldn't entertain stealing software such as this anyway. Too much risk of virus IMO.

Although I did steal a matchbox ferrari when I was younger

If you could download a gearbox, exhaust, cat, engine, etc. rather than buy it, many people would.

The problem lies with the ease of theft of software/music over the internet as it is faceless and untraceable - when done properly - and you don't have to look over your shoulder ever couple of seconds to see if another customer or a member of staff is watching you.

If stealing a car part, or a trolley of shopping was as easy then more would do it.

However, it is wrong and any software I use more than a couple of times a year is bought. I still download software though, and if I find it's what I want I then go and find the cheapest place to buy it so I can have the producers full support for technical problems.

Or you could go to www.overclockers.co.uk and get it at a similar price from a PH'er. I believe this site is run by someone here although I can't remember who.

Ooooh there's lots of good stuff on that overclockers site (I'd never heard of it before)

OEM version of XP is £52.95 and a 1GB of fast Crucial PC3200 RAM is only £51.95

Anyone been to the Microsoft shop at the Microsoft HQ in Seattle? My previous boss was there not long ago and picked up copies of a lot of software for pretty much nothing, $10USD for a copy of the latest editon of Office anyone?
