Bought a new laptop at the weekend.

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L7310G

Machine does not match the specs shown in the store or on the web site.

Would you take it back and demand refund?

Depends on whether it is of an equivalent spec and/or still fits your requirements.
Also depends on whether the retailer reserved "the right to supply an equivalent or superior product" in the event of your model being out of stock (and, of course, excercised that right - hence my point above)

However, all things being equal then there should be no problem getting a refund under the Sale Of Goods Act for being supplied with something other than what you ordered.

That sounds like the £200 off one on TV advert,

looked quite a bargain, if it'd worked out

If it is a worse specification then yes.

I thought the features were pretty fixed in the Amelio range, what are the differences?

Store info stated 128mb shared graphics - machine only has 64mb
4 USB ports - only 3
3 hours battery life (depending on usage obviously)
Website had correct graphics, but stated 3 USB 1 Firewire
also 3 hours battery life

It would appear the battery fitted is the lower life 1.5hour jobbie. This would make it worse than my older Compaq !

I only really want this for using in another room to digitize designs (to free up my other PC with internet access) and take with us to download digi photos at FOS.

At the moment it's the principle of the thing. Lies, lies and more lies but that seems normal for the vendor

Did you buy it online or over the phone?

If so you can reject it for absolutely no reason whatsoever within 7 days under the Distance Selling Act.

From the differences described I'd chuck the book at them!

Personally I would prefer to have a firewire port and one less USB (can always get a hub) but then that's probably because I have a number of Firewire devices anyway.

As for the shared graphics memory - it's not something I know about but I always assumed that it would be a configuration issue about how much of the system memory would be allocated to the graphics procesing. Swings and roundabouts really if that is the case - or am I missing something from my understanding?

As for battery life - very iffy matter.

Does it have built in WiFi? If so check whether it is switched off or on when assessing battery life. If it's on and constantly seeking a network the drain might well be rather high. Also the quoted figures may well be at optimal battery management settings for a specific task set - unlikely to be for 'standard' usage as per your standard. I always think that getting 75% of any quoted figure is pretty good going.

For all of that if you think the purchase will not give you all you hoped, take it back.

You can probably use more of your memory for graphics by altering the settings in the bios.
The other stuff has probably been covered above..

The 'Shared' part means that the other 64mb is coming from the system ram, however it depends how the machine is configured, so its not really a specification IMHO.

The battery is the one I would be concerned about, 1.5hrs when its supposed to be 3hrs? How do you know this was the mAh rating for the battery listed in the advert?

The other thing to check is if the advert listed any terms and conditions, i.e. specification subject to change without notice.

Ran the l/top last night playing Wish you were here. It played the album plus the last 2 tracks again then the battery zonked out. So that would give a total running time of just over 1 hour. Not good enough.

Took back to shop this am, in all honesty they couldn't have been more helpful. It would appear this may be a group specific machine, and they weren't able to sort higher output battery.

Full refund received, shame really the screen was excellent.

Looking on bright side there are plenty of others out there and it wasn't an urgent purchase.

Now who can recommend a good laptop

Slam it back in their face then go on eBay, with a maximum price the same as that one cost you... and bet you'll find something better!!
