Quick question.

I need to share a file across the internet. Not the usual download it stuff, but actually for it to open from a proper file server and changes are made to the file on the fly just like you would with a corporate file server.

I have a smaba server in our office - is there anyway to share the file from that server to an XP client on the internet somewhere else?

I'd use FTP if i were you, better security and easier to set up. If you must have all the bells and whistles i'd look into VPN's.

Yes, keeping it nice and easy, i'd recommend FTP.

Just open up TCP 21 on your firewall inbound & remember to password it!

You could use an SSH/FTP client for XP like PuTTY to transfer the file back and forth, I think that would just be one straight forward port mapping. Failing that, if your equipment supports incomming VPN connections you could do it that way to join the networks and map a drive on the XP box to manipulate the file in-situ.

The easiest thing to do might just be a remote desktop type thing though?
