I've been trying to get my mates computer fixed up to the internet. For the time being I'm trying to establish a dial-up connection only.

I connected a phone line to the internal modem and to the wall socket, but when I try and make a new connection via the Network and dial-up connections in the Control Panel, all I get is 'there is no dial tone' messages.

I even tried to load his AOL software but when it tried to ring AOL via the internal modem, I got the same error.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Modem dead, cable knacked, wall socket not connected - could be anything....

If modem, cable and socket check out, might be worth verifying there isn't a BT message waiting to be delivered - modems won't recognise a dial tone if that's the case..

Modem should be OK, it's a brand new machine.

1. Is there a dial tone, or is the phone socket dead?
2. Try a different cable.
3. Try a different PC / modem ist kaput.

Wall socket OK ? Do you get a constant dial tone with a phone plugged in ?

Phone works with no problem from the socket. Tried a couple of cables too.

Been a while since I fiddled with 56K modems....

Is the 'Wait for dial tone before...' checkbox ticked ? (Control Panel / Modems / Properties).

Try unticking it..

Don't know, but I'll check that out when I'm up there next.
