a bit similar to some other threads so apologies for that but didn't want to hijack anyone's question.

I have a work laptop that runs on a wireless network and works fine on my home wireless network too- where there's also a wirelessly linked pc; so...

how do i file share and have both computers seeing each other? Does that fact that i have the laptop set up for a work network affect this?

it must be easier than i'm imagining it!

cheers,

Polynesian

Are both machines XP Pro?

I got it working using file sharing but had to ensure that the firewalls on both machines were switched off

Go to My Computer and right click on the drives you want to share, and check the relevant options in the Sharing & Security tab.

If the machines can see each other (in the same DOMAIN for example, which perhaps assumes you are likely to have set up your home network with the naming convention of you work network) then it shouod be as easy as ensuring you have set up sharing on the drives/folders you may want to share. Not all folders are easily shareable - Windows and Programs for example are usually not allowed.

It can get a little more complex. Also it may take a few minutes for the shares to appear when you first set things up depending on how the network is set up (if it is peer to peer for example) and how the machines are broadcasting their presence ...

Would suggest downloading some free or shareware FTP software for use on both Laptops. You will then be able to drag/drop files from one to the other.
As previously mentioned, you will need to be aware of that fact that one or both Laptops may have active firewalls. However, I woudn't recommend switching the firewalls off, (even though at home, your wireless router almost certainly is blocking external traffic anyway) as your I.T. dept would probably be upset when you used your work Laptop at work. Far better to 'allow' the FTP program to access both Laptops through the firewall, (might need to read your firewall manual!!! Its not that tricky tho, honest!).

thanks all of you for your help. I'm sure i can do it! The work machine is xp pro, the other home edition, but there's clearly enough here for me to have a crack at it. Really appreciate your help :-)
