Get the motherboard manual out and listen to the beeps. They are a code to tell you what is wrong. Make sure the card is in correctly.

If it's a PCI Express one, it may need an additional power adaptor plugging into the graphics board. It is also worth erasing the battery backed memory (there is usually a little onboard switch or jumper to do this) as the PC may be trying to boot whilst under the impression that it has a different video card.

cheers for the responses guys - i've put it away for tonight as i'm hacked off with it. The card has its 2nd power connector connected and the card is seated in the right slot - i cant see what i've done wrong. I'll try the resetting the BIOS/CMOS etc tomorrow evening... i hope its something silly like that

check the card in the socket is it in strait ?

sounds like it may not be a good fit some case are not the great and the cards dont fit in that well
look at edge conector and see if its in strait some time you have pull it out on one side a touch or piss about with washers under motherboad
the beep is a fault if look up board it will tell what beeps mean

second shaw you power supply up to the job ?
ok scrap power supply as i saw what you got in games forum
then againg theres a small posability that the power supply is flakey on on voltage but working otherwise

failing that ill say that its card duf
you know any one with another pc you can drop the card in to find out.
after all its not a bas card i wouldent have got a msi myself but there ok

i got xfx g7800 gtx

The card is definately in the socket correctly. I'll have to look at the beep code at home later I suppose there could be a very remote chance the board may be touching the case under the socket since i pushed it in.. i will have a look.

The PSU should be fine. The seasonic is one of the best out there for stability (it got rated over 90% in custom PC mag and its 600w so i'd be very surprised if the PCI-e rail is duff... i will try the other one though to be sure.

MSI, XFX etc all use the same board design as far as i'm aware so i dont think there much between them performance wise. Everything i read on the MSI flavour said they were very well built and excellent performers.... I was going to get an XFX until i was shafted on ebay on one

Will try these things later - fingers crossed Otherwise its another quiet weekend for me

Cheers

Are there any jumpers on anything re: SLI setup, and if so are they set correctly?

Hi Aldi

On the motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI) there is a only a weird card item that you spin around when you want two cards running. Its currently installed to run 1 card. There are two really small slots (about and inch long) to the left of the cards that look like minatutre pci-e slots - i haven't the foggiest what they do as the sli bridge connects on the top of the cards and not via the motherboard ?

iv got same mother board there no jumpers re sli set up
the spinaround card for sli set up is fine it fited for a singel gfx gard as default

re them small thing i belive there for cards such ad fast lan cards but nevr seen any avalible.

theres a molonex power conector on the main board designed to keep board power levels stable if your running a sli set up

you could try powering it if there is a power its probley not that but woth a try

what ever it is a hardwear problem as the boius is not posting

its not in manual as far as i could find ie the beep codes i just looked in mine

re the card not in strait glade you know to check was wort a look seen a lot my pc wont woke and beeps looked to find a a card not in strait

this mite help a bit for beeps

re power supply m8 you be suprised yes is a great supply but if seen meany a flakey supply

first thing you best do is get the carded tested in another system and then go from there

I highly suspect that its a bad video card looking at that. There is definately a long beep followed by 2 or 3 fast beeps

There is a specific tech support thread for the Asus A8N-SLi running here : www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/38623/?o=0

There are stacks of pages there, maybe you will find something relevant..

Cheers for that - that looks quite useful. I've found something that may be useful - looks like other people have had similar problems and it could be down to the BIOS :

Those little sockets between the 2 big PCI Express sockets are also PCI Express sockets, but only capable of running 1 channel (the small one) or 4 (the slightly bigger one) - supposedly for things like network cards, audio cards etc. It might be worth putting the video card in the other big socket and giving that a go. Chances are the beep means "I can't find a display adaptor".

Yeah those beeps are definately bad video card - i didnt bother trying the other slot as its only x1 speed when a single card is installed. I've got a replacement coming monday and i'm going to try it in a work pc before i take it home. That way i can rule out the card. It may even be a back motherboard... we'll see

Update coming monday
