Had a brainwave that essentially my PC does all the tasks I reuqire from a DVD recorder whilst reading a review of a handful of wireless media players.

Anyone got one, if so how do they find it?

One thing the review didnt mention - is it possible to stream DVD from PC to TV?

I've got an eyeHome, but this is no good for you as its Mac only. Mutts nuts it is, streams music, photos and movies from my Mac in most formats encluding decrypted DVD, divx etc.

I have a media player on my xbox (XBMC) - plays back everything, remote control, HDTV output, etc.

I use a Pinnacle ShowCenter...

It streams photos and most movie and music formats and plays Internet Radio. It can be hardwired over the LAN but mine is running over a 402.11g wireless network.

It comes with Media Server software (a media library) which runs on my main PC. The software allows you to add / remove stored photos, music, movies, etc. When the ShowCenter is switched on, the Media Library stored on the PC is displayed on the TV. Just navigate, select and play.

I have a progressive scan DVD player beneath the TV so I have never needed to try streaming DVD from the PC to my TV using the ShowCenter - I don't think it can be done. I suspect you would have to rip the DVD to DiVX / MPEG first.

Last time I looked they were a couple of hundred quid to buy - may be cheaper now..

In hindsight, if I was to try and achieve a similar result now, I would probably go for a Shuttle or dedicated media PC, stick it under the plasma and run Windows Media Centre. A mate has this and its the nuts...

edit: to add piccy

I have a Dlink media lounge it can either be wired or used on a wirless network. I use it to stream video and photos to my plasma it can also play internet radio.

I have found it easy to set up and quite simple to use, however it does not work well when you have a large amount of data dropped into the dlink folder on your PC, I have 160 gigs of music, and as soon as you ask the dlink to read the folder it just falls over.

I have since bought a Sonos system which is absoloutely brilliant, to sort out my music problem, I now just use the dlink for video and pictures and it works well.

A few.

Smart devices, would be interested to know the maximum density over wireless when paired with one or two devices carrying a video signal.
