I was sat at home last night on my 4mb net access thinking that it would be good if I could tell my computer at home to download something big as our 512kbps connection at work is a bit slow for large files.

If I find that file at work, I have to wait til I get home to downloaded it.

How about a program running on the computer at home that will download the file I tell it to!

I've already written a very basic windows program that will check an email box for a specifically formatted message and download the file contained within it.

It could work for many sutuations, eg out in the file, you could send the request to any computer.

Anybody know of anything else like this, am I re-inventing the wheel?

I'm thinking of a website too, that will allow you to enter usernames/password to download from secure sites (you don't want to send this info in an email).

You could set up your machine at home to run VNC or similar so that you could remote control it from work. This way the skies the limit, you could set it off doing whatever you like from work...or anywhere.

Already thought about that, but I'm thinking of the situations when you either a) can't do it b) don't know how

This would be a lot quicker too - just an email is needed.

Thanks anyway

There could be a security issue i wouldn't want someone emailing me a program like that. It could set up all sorts of nasty stuff on your PC.

Remote Desktop is the way to do it IMHO.

Yep, at the very least Remote Desktop, or if you are getting fancy any one of the Remote Desktop clients.

Ensure you have a static IP first though as you'd find it a pain to connect otherwise...

Those dynamic DNS services are pretty damned good, I use one for RDP access...

Really, can you post a linky, as I may have a use for my remote users when it comes to supporting them.

www.dyndns.org

The Netgear DG834 line have a Dyndns client so the router sorts it all out for you.

I always found dyndns a pita as it expires after a certain amount of time if the ip address hasn't changed, I use no-ip.com - it comes with a windows program to do the update.

Linksys routers also have a dyndns client.

Eh? ssh & wget. If you want to let it run without you being logged in, just nohup it.

Result!

Maybe I should have posted this in a non-techie forum!

My original idea was for a program for poeple who either can't or don't know how to do more advanced things like remote desktop, vnc, or run linux to be able to use a faster connection by simply sending an email.

e.g.

sending an email to get@somewhere.com
with the subject get:filename.exe

is much simpler, faster, and secure than any other method mentioned here!

I'll keep it for my own use then

Not sure about secure... how about a site where you log in with https, post urls via a form, and the home machine polls the url at a given interval?

If you want it pretty damn safe, you could even use key-exchange encryption to encrypt the links.

Just thinking out loud really...

Already in the pipeline - more for downloads that need a username/password
Would also allow the host to update the download status so you can see it on the website
