I have a client who registered his own domain names.
A .com and a .co.uk

The company he registered them with does not exist any more. And we need to transfer them from where they are to our servers in the UK.

I advised him to contact nominet re: the UK domain, which he has done. They helped out and its winging its way to us as I speak

How do I go about taking control of the .com domain? Is there a governing body in the US who, like nominet, can step in and help should things go awry? I told the client I didnt think there was, but wasnt sure. Im hoping im wrong.

Yes, we can just use the .co.uk domain name, but the client has advertised the .com, and if I can save him money and business by somehow rescuing it then Id rather do that for him than just use the .co.uk.

Can anyone help/advise?

These are the US equiv of nominet. ICANN is the whole world governing body, they dish out the rights to people like nominet, netsol, etc.

Will they be able to help the cilent take control of the .com domain name, so he can transfer it to our UK server?

I'd be astonished if they can't. One assumes the client can prove ownership, I'm sure netsol have procedures in place for this. This looks like your starting point:

www.networksolutions.com/domain-transfer/index.jhtml

If you don't get anywhere, let me know. We are a "gold VIP member" or some such garbage so I should be able to get an answer.

Thankd dobbo

https://joker.com/index.joker?mode=page&page=impressum - although registered elsewhere, the domain seems to be with these guys, but the phone number doesnt seem to work (im adding a 00 before the first 41)

Will have to ask the client to email them, and hope they dont take forever in replying.
