Basically, talking to ol Pwig earlier and tis apparent his pc keeps locking, with a reset the only option. Got him to check his event viewer and it came up with:

1) The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.
2) A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

He ran a scandisk on drive c and it came clean. Is error one specifying drive d, partition d or is it just a truncated error message? Another friend reckons its either the mobo, psu or hdd.

Any other ideas?

Not an offer of help, but a question - how do you check the event viewer ?

If he has a drive D (and presumably windows is on C) then try unplugging the drive (just the IDE cable) and see if the computer runs OK then.

Also download some better hard drive analysis software and run that.

Is he running RAID (parity error)?

Try turning off caching and then running the disk tools error checks.

Drive "D" is more than likely his recovery partition, which along with "C" is on his one and only hard drive, if he unplugs that nothing is going to work.

Sounds like the hard disk is shagged !? I would try a different disk in there and see how it behaves...

It took numerous appempts at starting it this morning before it would turn on the montior!

As the event viewer said

1) The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk0D.

It probably wasn't lieing and yes, sadly, I must concur

Dying harddisk controller. Symptom of dying motherboard.
