Can anyone shed any light on this? Ive just reinstalled windows 2k pro for a neighbour of mine and when installing the wingman software from disk a dialog box turned up complaining that it a - could not install the uninstall bit of it and b that it could not access the registy. the rest of it completed ok but now, when starting the machine with it connected, it crashes when the wheel does its left, right, central thing when windows loads. The whole machine just ticks into off with no explanation. Ive tried different usb ports and downloading the appropriate software from logitech which this time works ok, but the problem remains. I know a few of the guys on here have the same wheel, have any of you had similar problems? and how did you solve them? this is a bit of a wierd one!

Sounds odd. Never had a problem with mine although I've not done anything as major as re-installing windows since I've had it.

Try posting on the Games forum too.

Sounds like the drivers have become corrupted during the install procedure. You are probably going to need to physically remove the corrupt drivers from the system and any registry references followed by running a registry cleaner of some kind (I use crap cleaner - google "ccleaner" ).
After removing all trace - reinstall the logitech software and hopefully everything should be ok.

Hmmmmm, I feared something like this might be necessary. However, In this case I dont know where to start could you, or indeed anyone else, point me in the right direction? I'm literate enough to run regedit etc and look for keys but past that i'm a little stuck... is there an easy way to find the files i need to nuke?

That's the difficult bit - you need to find the files in the systems directories (win32 ect.) might be an idea to look at the logs in the event via and see if any files are flagged up. I assume you've tried uninstalling the device in the device manager?

I you look at the driver disk it will have a .inf file that specifies which files are copied onto the machine. Search for and eradicate them. Check the registry for instances of the filenames. Also you can find out what files it uses by right clickin gon it in device manager and use the driver details tab

sorry to bug you guys again but im having real probs with this one.

the ini file is about a foot long and has approx 200 registry entries in it - i just cant see myself going through all of them to remove them all - surely theres a better way? is there some sort of windows 2k debugging tool that i can run that will tell me what windows is looking at when it crashes to give me some sort of idea whats going on?
TIA

filemon and regmon from sysinternals will show file and registry activity. I think you can set them to log straight to a file so you can look at it after the reboot to see what it was up to.
