I am trying to fix a friends laptop which keeps BSODing and then going into a restart loop, but I have a few problems, thatg all stem from one.

The laptop is Japanese and all it's workings are in Japanese. The drivers are available only in Japanese from the NEC web site. I have mailed NEC support who refuse to help me as the computer is currently not in Japan!!

But I have found a recovery partition on the machine, only problem is that I don't really know how to access the recovery partition.

Anybody got any ideas??

I know the recovery partition has all the drivers etc on it already, so I just need to access it. Is there are regular button or somthing that you press to boot off this on laptops?

Sounds like the operating system is dead in some way shape or form, guessing its windows?

If you have data on the main partition that needs to be recovered, hook the drive up to another PC (most laptop drives are IDE) and extract the data, you can also check for the backup partition and copy anything off there you need. Format the main partition (not the backup partition) resinstall windows etc, when asked for video drivers etc update from backup partition (assuming its there).

Unfortunately I can't reinstall windows as it has to be in Japanese. That's why I was wondering if I can install off the back up partition? Also the Japanese drivers do not work with English XP.

A lot of them now work in this way.

Power off machine.
Power on machine.
Hold F10.

If it's anything like the last two I looked at (which weren't japanese!) it'll boot up the recovery partition and give you the chance to reinstall with various options, but probably best to get it to do the format and install option.

Cheers guys!! it was F11 and then I reinstalled the backup partition. Turned out to be a dodgy graphics driver, tooke me around 2 hours to diagnose that!! Damn hard working in another language you don't understand.

Anyhow after fixing it all, test all apps, burnt a few CDs, watched a few vids, it connected itself to the net, and downloaded SP2. It then proceeded to BSOD all over again, excpet this time I couldn't even get into safe mode!! Fecking Microsoft!! So I start again!! At least it's straight forward this time. I hope.
