Really strange, everything working fine, and then computers on the network cannot get email or internet access apart from the websites they were viewing at the time (we refreshed and browsed the sites)

Our server can still get access to all sites!

Anybody heard of this?

When you say they can get access to the sites they were viewing at the time do you mean just the 1 page they were viewing or the whole site?

Sounds like the firewall wall may be blocking their access and they're just being served the cached page(s).

DNS problem? what's the error they're getting? When it's not working, can they ping an internet IP directly? What do you do to make it work again, reboot something or is it just random?

They can access the entire site, and do searches and get results, so not cached.

MEssenger is blocked on their machines, but Skpe works, so obviously a port problem, but what would make it shut down like that all of a sudden

Overly twitchy attack detection on the firewall?? Connections per second or something like that maybe

Not really enough detail to go on

Okay, now realised that the server can get web access and if we run the other machines through the server they work fine too, but why can't they get direct access to the internet without using the server all of a sudden?

What have you got between the network and the internet?

have you run ipconfig /all to see what the gateway machine is,

if you do a tracert from the non connection pc what route is it using ,

route print maygive clues also if they connect through the server only check ipconfig on this and tracert and compare results ,

could be firwall related problem also

If you're getting paid by the hour wait for it to fail again, you need to ping gateways and DNS with at least a few hundred different size packets while it's off to figure out where to look next. If not, job done
