I connect 2 laptops together using a USB cable.

Would they see each other as removable drives and be able to copy, delete files etc?

They are both USB host devices. USB works with 1 host and a number of client devices. This does work with Firewire though (at least with Macs), either as a network connection or boot one Mac into target disk mode.

That would go BANG!!!!! It cannot be done like that. Sorry.

The copy cable system is a USB->serial->USB. hence it sees it as another serial port. A bit like laplink that copied over the serial port.
Your best option as mentioned is to use a crossover cat cable.

You can get special USB cables that allow you to connect two PCs together. That's what I did before I got my network working. My old laptop and PC didn't have network ports but did have USB. Only USB1.1 but you can get USB2. Amazon have a eXpansys USB to USB Network Bridge Cable for £18.73

Just use wireless, you can get cheap tiny usb plug in wifi cards for less than £20 so just get a couple of them and plug them into the usb ports and set up a basic peer to peer connection, that is assuming neither laptop has wireless, if they do, your already set
