Right, I have my copy of the Gimp and a few jpgs and I want to create an image for the front page of our website. Problem is I'm about as artistic as something that isn't very artistic at all. We're an IT company specialising in networking so I want to conjour up that image.

How do you graphics bods go about it? Do you start with a definitive idea, a background, a transparency? What effects work well with image boundaries? Do you blur, airbrush or what do you do? I'm really struggling for inspiration at the moment.

I guess that's why we end up paying creative types to do that kind of thing...

We paid a grand for a flashy logo about a year ago, we were pretty pleased with it too. No, you can't see it They brought up loads of stuff we hadn't thought of, like how it looks in black & white, through fax, upside down, if you scale it down tiny for envelopes or up for something else. All things to consider anyway. I'm sure someone who knows the answer will be allong soon!

What sort of thing are you looking for?

There's a fair bit of creative talent at large on here

Despite the obvious quality and attention to detail it's not quite what I had in mind for the company Shady

I probably didn't explain myself very well. We already have a company logo which is fine, I want to create some sort of watermark amalgamation type thingy as a backdrop to the text on the main page of our website.

It's as much about which techniques to use, although any hints on inspiration are good too

Think I know what you mean. Can you show any examples of sites you like?

The way I did it was to create a version of each of the ideas that I had

Then, each of the ideas out of that lot I could discount immediately on reflection, I did.

With the ones that were left I then did versions with various colours

Out of them I created a shortlist and then I chose.

Actually, thinking about it do you supply as well as install?

Do me a deal and I'll do you a logo!!

Mail me what sort of stuff you need supplied and I'll let you know who we have accounts with.

First thing I do is speak to the client, work out exactly what sort of angle they are coming from and get a feel of how they envisage their logo. Then I scribble down a load of preliminary ideas making sure that there is a broad spectrum of ideas, before fleshing some of them out on the computer and sending copies to the client to get their reactions.

If you want a hand drop me a mail.

Easypeasylemonsqueezy.

Ok, maybe not *that* easy.

Go to Google Image search, type in something like 'network logo' or whatever and browse. Vary the words a bit and you should get a good idea of what other companies are using. I'm not saying copy their designs, just get an idea of what is "in". An alternative is to type 'stock art networking' into Google main search and look to see what is commercially available.

Use something like a graduated cyan -> white background, maybe with a faint superimposed abstract networky pattern, keep the main logo part simple, with a subtle drop shadow to bring it out from the background slightly.
