OK, I still can't get a PC I have built to see the network or connect to the internet, if I clone the HDD of another PC I have with only basic programs on and then change the PC name will that work and allow instant access?

Nick

PS I will use Acronis to Clone HDD

Is the PC providing the clone exactly identical to the dodgy one? Expect Windows to put up a fight if you're using it...

Better to diagnose why you can't get on t'internet in the first place, as the other machine may fall over at the same point. Dial up or ADSL?

No its got a different Motherboard, all else the same.

Its ADSL, can't seem to get the Local Area Connection on this PC just the 1394 Icon?

Keep running thru network setup and Internet setup and it will not connect or see the network?

Thanks

so it's saying that no cable is connected?
First thing u can try is reinstalling the network card:
Start -> rightclick on 'My Computer' -> properties -> hardware -> Device Manager > click + next to network adapters > right click any network card there and click on 'Uninstall' > restart your system

When it has restarted it will find and install your network card again and then try connecting to the internet

If the p[roblem you have is thast it is connected and see's that a cable is connected to the computer:

start -> run -> 'cmd' -> 'ipconfig /all'

Past the infomation back here.. If the IPaddress like 169.254.*.* then try this:

start -> run -> 'cmd' -> 'netsh winsock reset'

If you get command not found or missing do this

start -> run -> 'cmd' -> 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt'

After either of them restart your system and see how that is.

If it still isnt working then would recomend running a Virus and spyware scan on the PC

Any problems just get back to us

Normasly windows copes ok with a reimaged HDD with a diffrent mobo as windows normaly holds when my engineers change mobos without remastering.

OK
Uninstalled 2 adaptors, restarted and it re-installed both and called them 3 and 4, I do not have a separate network card just the one on the motherboard, why are there 2?

Did the ipconfig and just get "windows IP configuration"

wasn't 1 of them firewire 1394? Firewire always shows under network adapters.. Other possobility is that you could have installed a Virtual network USB adapter at some point if you've ever used a USB cable modem.

Try the winsock reset as it is a posobilkity that it could be a winsock problem.. failing that see if the green light on the network card comes on when u connect the cable.. if not one on rear of PC then check on the router or what ever device your connecting your computer too

I do have an additional firewire card installed is this showing as an adaptor? it doesn't say so just Network adaptor and network adaptor #2.

This is a brand new windows XP pro install, nothing at all added as yet as I wanted to download all windows updates prior to adding programs.
Thanks

Well things are no so easy as I thought!

Finished loading all the software I need and fully updated the PC online. Trouble is I thought I could now access the network but I can't?

All other PC's in the workgroup show up as does this one from anothre PC but when I try and map a network drive it says it is not possible and I may not have access rights? There are no passwords, every PC has guest enabled and yet I have no access.

What glaringly obvious thing have I not done this time?

You're trying to map a share on the XP pro machine to a drive on another machine? On the machine that hosts the share i.e. the XP pro machine you either need to have a matching username/password set up OR as well as enabling the guest account you need to also go start/run/gpedit.msc and in the local machine security settings make sure that 'guest' is notlisted under 'deny access to this computer from the network'. You may also need to add 'guest' to both the share permissions and the file security for the files you're shared.

~Hope this helps

Have run this and can't find the section referred to?
There do not appear to be and permissions accessible in "Security"
Any chance of a "step by step"?

Cheers

What I need to do is share the root drive C: so that I can schedule backups and also drag across things like my Outlook files and other documents, am I right in thinking that simple file sharing will still prevent me seeing the whole drive and hence make this difficult?

Sorry It's in Windows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PoliciesUser Rights Assignment. 'deny access to this computer from the network' usually has 'guest' in it, you don't want it to in your case.

I have looked and there is no listing (apart from Support)in the deny access, still saying I am not allowed to use this network rescource when I try and view others from the new PC and denying access to the visible C: drive of the new PC from all the others?

Bound to be something simple, I'd go through maddog's link and see if anything jumps out.
